It was deep into the chilling winter when the strong-willed redhead's curiosity grew from the roots that were planted years upon years ago. April O'Neil gazed above at the ladder peeking out of the attic with caution, yet at the same time with a burning desire for answers. What could be found there she had no clue, but still, the young woman found herself wanting to search the abandoned room.

She, Casey, and the four turtle brothers had been staying at the old farm house she had grown up in for quite some time now, and the attic was still left untouched. Michelangelo had asked to go up into the small room, but Donatello convinced the orange-clad terrapin that the job was for April to attend to.

Then, as the young woman stood at start of the steps, her interest was piqued and she couldn't help but wonder what awaited to be found.

April climbed the rickety ladder slowly and lifted the covering of the attic, carefully pushing it to the side. She wriggled up and wedged herself into the opening, then took the flashlight from her pants so she could more than a foot in front of her. She gained her feet and shuffled across the creaky floorboards, disturbing the dust that had accumulated over the years of disuse.

She went though the boxes, finding many old records and various tapes that her parents had collected. She was amazed at the array of genres. From blues to rock 'n roll, her parents had it all.

The next thing she came to was a beautiful collection of porcelain dolls and figurines. She remembered her mom dusting them every week while humming to herself a soft tune, being extra careful with the blue-outfitted, pig-tailed brunette doll. She always wore elbow-length gloves when she did any household chore. April always wondered about her mother's odd mannerisms and about the way she went about things. It was always a mystery.

April's eyes widened as her eyes set on a video tape entitled "Mom and April at the Park". She lifted it up and dusted it off with care, a vague memory playing in her cluttered mind. She clutched it to herself and found her way to the ladder once more, descending down it and trying to remember if they had a VCR player at the house.

After a few minutes of searching rooms, she found a VCR player in the family room. She popped the tape in and settled into the couch, bringing her knees to her chest and waiting for it to begin.

On the television, images of a lovely blonde woman and a freckled, redheaded little girl playing on a playground danced across the fuzzy screen. The little girl climbed up the slide then went down the metal contraption, arms flying high and squealing all the way down. The light-haired woman picked up her small daughter and held her close, saying, "Good job, April. Want to go again?"

April's big blue eyes filled with unwanted tears as she continued to gaze longingly at the screen. More and more tears came, blurring her vision and making her realize how much she had kept in.

Her mom was gone. The Kraang faked a replica of her and had her family nearly killed. Nothing will ever be the same.

Hadn't Donnie promised they would find her? Where had that promise gone? Donnie had never broken a promise before, so what would make her not believe his words? Doubt attacked her thoughts and she cried into her knees hard and long, sounding helpless and feeling alone.

Why was her world crashing down?

Footsteps neared where she was seated and became louder as they got closer. Soon a tall figure towered over her, and the concerned voice on Donatello followed, love clear in his tone. "April? Sweetie, what's wrong?"

April looked up at him with bloodshot eyes, then began to sob even harder.

Donatello rushed to her side and took her in his arms, gently brushing a few strands of stray hair away from her face. He glanced at the television screen and seemed to immediately know what her reason for crying was.

April nestled her head into the nape of his neck and sniffled quietly, attempting to make the crying stop. Her breathing went back to normal after a few minutes of Donnie rocking and holding her.

Donnie kissed the side of her head, whispering softly to her, "It's okay; you're fine... I got you."

April gazed up at him, tears bubbling up once again in her eyes. "I just... I just want her back. A part of me still believes that she's safe and we'll find her, but what if I'm just giving myself false hope?"

"I don't know, sweetie, I don't know..." Donnie kissed her tear-covered cheeks and jawline and stroked her hair with the back of his hand. "I promise that I'll do everything in my power to get her back, April. Whatever it takes, I'll do it. Promise."

She put her arms around him and settled into the crook of his arm, taking in the warmth and comfort his body had to offer. "Thank you... so much." she said quietly.

He smiled, kissing her once again. "Anything for you."

Some DonnieXApril fan fiction. I just love them together, so I couldn't resist writing something like this. Seriously, together they are perfection.

Set in the TMNT 2012 universe.

Written in April's point of view, as you can see. I hope you enjoy. Opinions are greatly appreciated. :)
